The Soo Locks in northern Michigan are closing for the season today. Joanne Gray
with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sault Ste. Marie says crews will “dewater”
the Poe Lock and then begin work on about ten different maintenance activities
including replacing or updating seals, valves and gears. Political and community
leaders are pushing for a new lock to be built. An economic study is underway. The
locks are scheduled to reopen in late March.
