Local police officials are reminding hunters and non-hunters alike about gun safety on this opening day of the firearms deer season. Sergeant Doug Decker of the Port Huron Police Department, sharing some hunting tips with WPHM, says treat all firearms as if they are loaded and keep your fingers off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot. Decker also suggests bringing along a first aid kit and making sure you’re up to date with your training. First time hunters born after 1960 will need to take a hunter’s safety course in order to purchase a license. And when you’re not hunting or at the range, Decker says gun owners need to keep their firearms secured in a safe or with trigger locks.
