Two downtown Port Huron corridors will look a little different come this time next year after a total reconstruction of a portion of Michigan and Quay Streets. The $3.3 million dollar project is expected to begin this spring and will result in the total rebuild of Quay between Huron and Merchant Street and Michigan between Quay and McMorran. Included is 23 new parking spots that will come as a result of new angle parking, with City Manager James Freed also saying two traffic lights at both Michigan and McMorran and Michiganand Grand River will be removed in the project. “It’s not needed, there’s no warrant for (the traffic light)….the traffic volume just isn’t there,” said Freed in an interview with WPHM following the D.D.A. meeting. In addition to the rebuilding of the road, new sewer and water mains will be laid during the project. Freed adds that the construction project will take place in three phases to minimize the impact on area businesses. The project will be funded by a combination of dollars from the Main Street Tax Increment Fund, the utilities department, and the city road millage. The general contractor for the project is Boddy Construction.
