The Arthur J is afloat and ready to head downbound...albiet slowly.... Lt. Justin Westmiller of the U.S. Coast Guard says salvage workers managed to get the barge back to the top of the lake early this morning. The over 100-foot dredge partially sank in lower lake huron 12-days ago...it went fully to the bottom late last week. The stubborn salvage operation faced choppy seas and other adverse weather conditions for several days. Meanwhile Lt. Westmiller says hats off to the many involved in the operation on both sides of the border and from several different agencies. The Arthur J and associated tug leaked around 2-thousand gallons of disel fuel but no long term environmental effects are expected acording to Westmiller. Beaches were closed for a day as a precautionary measure.
