You might soon see an additional name on the walls of Port Huron Hospital....McLaren Health Care. The two have signed a letter of intent for Port Huron Hospital to become a part of the McLaren system....it would be the 12th hospital to do so for the Flint based health network. The announcement was made formal this week. Port Huron Hospitals President and CEO, Tom Defauw says challenges to the health care system in general with health care reform and spcifically population changes locally. Some capital improvements are promised in the agreement including a long sought after bed tower which could allow in time for new patient rooms. As for McLaren there are a number of plusses too. The system's Chief Administrative Officer is Greg Lane he notes part of the attraction for both involves economies of scale. He says however it is not just about money by pointing out that Port Huron Hospital is well located for the system and has been a good operation....one they have looked at for a number of years. The letter of intent for the two non-profits to come together now goes thru an approval and regulartory process that could take several months to complete. Local governance and management will essentially remain the same under the agreement with the possibility of additional employment locally if the hospital expands.
