Cleaning up the St. Clair River was the topic, Thursday, at an environmental symposium at the Double Tree in Port Huron. Patty Troy of the Binational Public Advisory Council says the help of all citizens is needed to keep the river clean. A couple hundred attended Thursday night's Signature Cocktail Contest as sponsored by the McLaren Port Huron Hospital Foundation.  The party, held this year at the Seaway Terminal, was a fundraiser for the upcoming Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees, now in its 26th year, to be held December 6th and 7th.
 
 
 
More lofts available in Downtown Port Huron, thanks to the transformation of the upper floors, at the Ben's Fine Furniture store.  Half of the 11-lofts have been rented, according to Georgina and Dave Witt who have over 40 lofts in the downtown area.
 
 
As expected 32-year-old Manuel Gamez was sentenced to life in prison, Wednesday, by Saint Clair County Circuit Court Judge Michael West.  That for the killing of Melissa Ichenberg and Daniel McRoberts who were found dead in a Port Huron townhouse in late July of last year.  McRoberts had been stabbed multiple times and Ichenberg was strangled in a case that left four children
 
The St. Clair County Department of Veterans Affairs along with their other partners are getting ready for Operation Veteran Job Readiness, which happens on Friday, at Baker College along Lapeer.  The county's Nancy Deising says the event is part of their Preparing Vets for Success program. Michigan’s unemployment rate, in August, declined over the month by three-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent. According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Fewer unemployed sought jobs in August according to the MDTMB.

The lowely Minnesota Twins took two out of three from the Detroit Tigers, with an 8-4 win in Minnesota on Wednesday night.  The Tigers lead over Kansas City slipped to a half game as the teams prepare to meet in Kansas City for a three game series that will begin on Friday night.  Miguel Cabrera had four hits, including two doubles, and an RBI in the loss.
Trailing 2-0 going into the ninth, the Detroit Tigers took the lead on a two-out three-run home run from JD Martinez.  However, the Twins came back and scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Joe Nathan and beat the Tigers 4-3 on Tuesday night, to end the Tigers four game winning streak.  The teams complete a three game series on Wednesday night in Minnesota.
The Detroit Tigers blew a six run lead on Monday night, but used back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning from Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera to beat the Minnesota Twins 8-6 in the first game of a three game series.  Kyle Ryan pitched to one batter in the eight and got a double play to earn the win for the Tigers, while Joakim Soria picked up his first save as a Tiger.  Game two
Ian Kinsler and JD Martinez each hit a home run and knocked in two runs on Sunday, as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 6-4 to sweep a three game series at Comerica Park.  The win moves the Tigers a game and a half ahead of Kansas City in the Central Division.  The Tigers start a three game series in Minnesota on Monday.
The Detroit Lions had three turnovers and missed two field goals on Sunday in a 24-7 loss at Carolina to the Panthers.  The loss puts Detroit at 1-1 on the season.  Jed Collins had the lone Lions touchdown on a pass from Matt Stafford, who passed for 291 yards in the game.  Detroit is home to Green Bay next week.
Alex Avila hit a go ahead two run home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.  The win allowed the Tigers to stay in first place in the Central by a half game over Kansas City.  Victor Martinez also had a home run for Detroit, who goes for a series sweep over the Indians on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Derrick Green rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, as Michigan pulled away from Miami of Ohio in the second half and won 34-10 on Saturday in Ann Arbor.  Devin Gardner added 184 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Wolverines, who will play host to Utah next Saturday.
Jarrett Mathison scored four touchdowns to lead the Marine City Mariners to a 38-23 win over the Marysville Vikings on Friday night.  Mathison rushed for 133 yards and three scores and also had 96 yards recieving and a score.   Trevor Quandt added 117 yards rushing and a touchdown.  The Vikings Phill Griffor passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
David Price pitched into the eighth inning to pick up the win, as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 7-2 on Friday night.  JD Martinez hit a home run and a triple and drove in four runs for the Tigers, who host Cleveland again on Saturday night at Comerica Park.
James Shields tossed a two hit shutout as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night to move back into the top spot in the Central Division.  Rick Porcello took the loss depite pitching well and allowing only two runs in six plus innings of work with eight strike outs.  The Tigers open a three game series with Cleveland on Friday night at Comerica Park.
