MICHIGAN BALLOT PROPOSALS



 
Supporters of a proposal that would require two-thirds majorities in the house and senate or a statewide public vote of approval to raise taxes say they have submitted more than 613,000 petition signatures to state election officials, nearly double the amount needed to put the proposal on the November ballot. Earlier Monday, backers of a proposal ensuring that the state’s home help workers can unionize and have a registry of those providing such services turned in an estimated 555,311 signatures. Still to come will be the submission of signatures requiring a statewide vote of approval for the construction of new international border crossings, an effort by the owners of the ambassador bridge to stop the proposed new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. 5 pm. Monday is the deadline for petition signatures to be submitted for proposals to appear on the November ballot with constitutional amendments requiring 322,609 signatures. Supporters of a proposal to ban the practice of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas known as fracking announced this afternoon that they fell well short of the necessary signatures, having obtained just 21,000. However, they plan to continue collecting signatures in hopes of getting their proposal on the 2014 ballot.
