The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments says the month of May is the start of Ozone Action season in Southeast Michigan. Last summer saw three Ozone Action days called. That followed 2012, one of the summers hottest on record, which saw 20 Ozone Action days. Since the mid-1990s, air quality in Southeast Michigan has improved, due, in part, to the actions that residents take on Ozone Action days. SEMCOG says tips include maintaining your car with regular tune-ups, oil changes, clean air filters, and proper tire inflation. It can save you 23 gallons of gasoline per year on average. Ozone Action days are announced in local media and other outlets, such as electronic freeway message signs. Additional information on Ozone Action days is available on SEMCOG's website.
