A New Jersey mayor welcoming the Denver Broncos to town for the Super Bowl was asked to get out of the way so John Elway could "meet the mayor." The Broncos arrived at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City Sunday night and John Elway, head of the team's football operations, was approached by a man who held out a piece of paper and asked for Elway's signature. Patrick Smyth, the Broncos' media relations director, stepped in and told the man Elway did not have time to meet with fans. Smyth said, "Sir, He has to keep moving. He has to meet the mayor of Jersey City." The man replied by revealing himself as Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. Elway laughed and signed the proclamation.

A German lottery winner says she tore up more than $500,000 in winnings and flushed it down the toilet to avoid paying nursing home bills for her late husband.  Angela Maier told a court she received a steep bill from the home that cared for her husband prior to his death shortly after she received her lottery winnings. Maier said she had consumed five bottles of champagne before she made the decision to tear up her $547,120 in lottery winnings and flush them down the toilet. While it was not illegal to destroy the money, only an expert would be able to determine if Maier was telling the truth about the fate of the cash. The court decided to forgo the expense of an expert and Maier agreed to pay the home $5,471 in compensation.

Authorities in California say a semi-trailer truck carrying 76,000 pounds of beef ribs caught fire, causing a portion of freeway to be closed for about 2 hours. The trailer was engulfed in flames after its rear tires caught fire, leading the westbound portion of the road to be closed for about 2 hours. Franco said firefighters reported the blaze had a "wonderful BBQ beef rib odor to it." The spokesman said the truck had been carrying the ribs from Flagstaff, Ariz., to Los Angeles. Franco said no injuries were reported from the fire and the incident remained under investigation.
