Target can predict the month your baby is due, based soley on your shopping history! Scary? Read on...
A man came into his local Target store, furious that coupons for cribs, diapers, and other baby products were being mailed to his teenage daughter. He assumed the mailings were random, but didn't think it was appropriate for the company marketing pregnancy products to someone her age. WOULD HAVE been a valid concern. HOWEVER...
A few weeks later, he returned to the store and apologized for his outburst. He talked with his daughter and it turns out that she was, in fact, pregnant! Target knew before the girl's father!!!
Essentially, they look for trends in each shopper... In the first 20 weeks of a pregnancy, they say zinc, calcium, and magnesium purchases increase significantly. Near the beginning of the 2nd trimester, more unscented lotions are bought. With this information, they can tailor their marketing you each individual at specific points in her pregnancy!
Target isn't alone in this type of research, hundreds of companies constantly analyze our behavior. Kind of makes me want to use cash from here on out! Is it creepy that they know this much or a benefit?
