Tigers Blank Sox

Five Detroit pitchers combined on a one hit shut out as the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 in game one of the American League Championship Series.  Boston's Daniel Nava broke up a no hitter with a one out single in the bottom of the ninth off Tigers' closer Joaquin Benoit.  Detroit pitching struck out 17 in the game.  Anibal Sanchez pitched six hitless innings, but walked six and struck out 12, leaving the game with a high pitch count.  Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strike outs.  Jose Veras struck out the first two hitters of the 8th and Drew Smyly got a fly out to end the inning, before Benoit entered the game in the ninth.  Benoit struck out the first batter he faced before allowing the Nava single, but he then retired the next two hitters on a fly ball and a pop up.  Jhonny Peralta had three hits and knocked in the games only run with a single in the fifth.  Detroit leads the best-of-seven series 1-0 with game two in Boston on Sunday night.
