WINDS CLOSE SCHOOLS, CAUSE POWER OUTAGES

High winds yesterday and overnight took their toll locally on several power lines and trees.  Most of the damage was west of the city with Capac and Yale schools closed today.  In Port Huron Area School District three elementary schools were closed: Keewahding, Thomas Edison, and Cleveland.  Nearly 150,000 DTE Energy customers were off the grid during on time or another in the last 24-hours  Officials hoped to have much of that power back on by the end of the day.  In some area Townships warming stations were made available for those residents that need them. Although winds were only clocked at just over 40-miles per hour near Port Huron up to 60-mile per hour gusts hit areas near Lapeer and Saginaw. No serious injuries were reported in the storms locally.  In neighboring states dozens of tornadoes were reported leaving at least six dead.
