VAULTING AMBITIONS TO SPRUCE UP SPERRYS BUILDING

The empty vaults that lay beneath the Sperry's building in downtown Port Huron are the topic today (Wednesday) for a special session of the city's Downtown Development Authority. City Manager, Bruce Brown, says the empty vaults are part of the building's basement, laying underneath city sidewalks along Grand River, between Huron and Superior. Brown says, filling the vaults is a priority, and another necessary step in renovating, as leaving them alone would pose a danger to the historic structure’s integrity. Brown added that, the matter is now one of timing, while the DDA needs to approve the project first, before sending it onto the Port Huron City Council for consideration. The bids are out for the project, hence the need for the special session today. The council is expected to take up the matter, at their next regular meeting, this month. The plan calls for removing the sidewalks, filling the vaults with sand and building new sidewalks.
