The Michigan State Police indicate four people lost their lives in four separate traffic crashes during the 2014 Fourth of July holiday weekend. Of the four crashes, two involved motorcyclists, one was a pedestrian and the other was a vehicle driver. Alcohol use was a factor in two of the crashes. 19 died in last year’s holiday count.

Cooking in front of 400 spectators didn’t seem to faze the Baker College students as they were cooking under pressure in a culinary competition at Detroit's Eastern Market that had a very happy ending for some local participants. Max Scherzer allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven in seven innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the LA Dodgers and a sweep in a two game series at Comerica Park.  Ian Kinsler, Don Kelly, Nick Castellanos, and Torii Hunter drove in runs for the Tigers, who play in Kansas City on Thursday.

Rajai Davis hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a stunning 5-4 win over the Oakland A's on Monday night at Comerica Park. Miguel Cabrera also hit a home run in the game for the Tigers, who never led until the Davis hit.  Game two of a three game series is set for Tuesday night in Detroit.
