Stupid News for 3/31/14

A man fooled a town in England into think he was their mayor by setting up a fake Twitter account. A man going by James Billington created the Twitter handle @mayorofStafford with a bio saying he's, "delighted to be representing the town of Stafford & surrounding areas." He sent his first tweet on March 8 and the people of Stafford quickly bought into it. Billington staged a ribbon-cutting at a local theme park and even passed around, "I'm the mayor of Stafford!" buttons. The Stafford town council caught on to the hoax and asked Twitter to shut the account down.

After a bank error in his favor netted him $31,000, a Georgia teen is being asked to return the cash. The problem is, he’s probably already spent most of it. Steven Fields deposited $31,000 and a teller at First Citizens Bank accidentally put it into an account belonging to an 18-year-old who has the same name. When the teen received the accidental deposit, he withdrew $20,000 and made $5,000 in purchases with his ATM card. It wasn’t until March 17 when the original Steven Fields complained about his missing money that the bank realized the error. When the teen went to take out money the next day, a teller asked him to return the cash. He then said the money was from an inheritance and later told a deputy that “he thought the money came from his grandmother’s estate. The bank gave Fields a deadline of March 19 to return the money before they would ask that he be prosecuted.

The Westboro Baptist Church is saying that it will picket an Oklahoma liquor store that put up a sign mocking the death of the group’s founder, Fred Phelps. Phelps died on March 20 at the age of 84. To commemorate the occasion, Moore Liquor decided to have a champagne sale and posted a sign reading, "Fred Phelps 1929-2014, Champagne 10% off! Not a coincidence." The WBC doesn’t find the sign funny and plans to protest.
