Kathie Sheets has been a school board member for 5 years, but Thursday saw her posting her resignation on her website kathiesheets.com. The action comes just a day after the board, in a special session, voted 4 to 3 to hire new superintendent Richard Weigel. He comes to the Port Huron school district from Niles, where he resigned a superintendent's job earlier this year amidst reported allegations of bullying staff and school principals. Three board members, Ann Murphy, Rasha Demashkieh and Ronda Ryan, voted against hiring Weigel. In her resignation letter, Sheets says she finds it ironic that the same behaviors which are allegedly associated with Weigel and are being used to challenge his suitability for the district, have been and still are an acceptable means of communicating displeasure at the board's decisions. Board President Jeff Stout says Weigel, pending final negotiations, has accepted the board's offer of an up to 2-year contract, with a one year review expected.
