Two people are dead and three others injured after two watercraft collided Sunday in the South Channel off of Harsen’s Island. The accident happened just before 7 p.m. Deputies say one person was arrested in the incident which saw a 25-foot Baja rode up and over a cabin cruiser. Nobody was injured on the Baja. At least one of the occupants of the other boat was thrown into the water. Killed were a 57-year-old male from Chesterfield Township and a 68-year-old Canadian female. Critically injured was a 62-year-old female from Chesterfield Township. Two others were also hospitalized. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Ontario Provincial Police, Clay Township Fire and Rescue, Macomb Sheriff’s Marine Division and Tri-Hospital EMS. The accident is still under investigation and alcohol does appear to have been involved. As for the individual arrested a statement from the St. Clair County Prosecutor’s Office indicates the 32 year old Chesterfield Township man was released pending toxicology results from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and final results of the accident investigation from the Sheriff’s Office. The man is accused of driving his 25 foot Baja boat and striking a cabin cruiser broadside.
