Several residents were honored Monday night, during the Port Huron City Councils regular session, by the Beautification Commission for their Yard of the Year award. The annual awards are given to individuals and groups for exceptional contributions to the beautification of our area with winners receiving a wooden yellow tulip to display in their yards. The Yard of the Year was started in 1988 and since then 579 awards have been given out by the commission. The Port Huron City Council created the commission back in Oct 1985 to enhance the natural beauty of the city. They manage 25 garden beds throughout the city. And the 4th floor of the Municipal Office Center has now been leased to the Economic Development Alliance, with City Manager James Freed saying it now offers a one stop shop for developers and business owners who can get permits, tax and grant assistance all under one roof. The city will use the revenue from the lease to replace carpet in the lobby and conference room in the M.O.C, with City Manager James Freed saying "It smells awful". The council also accepted the bid from Superior Contracting Group, LLC for nearly $500,000 for a new restroom and concession stand building at Lakeside Park. The old restroom and concession building is slated to be demolished soon with construction of the new faculties to be completed by May of next year.
