Goals for the city

It’s important to have goals, that’s why every year the Port Huron City Council comes together to decide the goals for the city for the next few years. Over the past few weeks the council has discussed their goals for the city, and during their regular meeting this week, the council adopted their list of 11 goals and priorities for the city. Rising pension and health care cost have been depleting the city’s general fund, threatening services. One of the council’s priorities looking ahead is to find ways to reduce the city’s unfunded liabilities and annual contribution costs. Developing methods of reducing those costs is one of the main goals for the council, says Mayor Pauline Repp. Having a multi-year budget, the city hopes to refrain from cutting services or employees. The council will also continue to see projects to completion, such as the Sperry’s Building development and CityFlats Hotel. The condominium project is also set for the old Y.M.C.A property, says Repp. New to the list of goals, the city is hoping to get some financial help as well from neighboring townships to share the cost of continuing to dredge the Black River Canal, which has been getting filled in more often due to high lake levels and a couple northeast winds.
