Economically speaking, things are starting to look better in St. Clair County. After years of decline, home prices are up slightly, says Dan Casey Director of the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County. Although things are getting back to normal when it comes to home prices, business are having trouble filling some positions. due mainly to the Great Recession, St. Clair County is lacking qualified workers to fill the open positions, says Casey. He says that training programs are available locally, and that people should take advantage of them. St. Clair County Community College offers apprenticeship and associate degrees. These are the higher paying jobs, notes Casey. Toolmakers can make $60,000 starting out, some even make 6 figures. Drawing qualified people back to the area is key says Casey. He credits the new Reverse Scholarship being offered by St. Clair County’s Community Foundation. These scholarships offer college grads with local ties money to pay off their debt if they relocate to the county and find employment.
