Increased lead emissions in a Port Huron neighborhood has caught the attention of local and state health agencies. Air quality monitors near the Mueller Brass Plant in Port Huron have detected higher than usual lead levels in the air, prompting action by the St. Clair County Health Department. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Annette Mercatante, in a statement to WPHM, says the lead levels are in compliance with national air quality standards and that state officials are working with Mueller Brass on resolutions. In the meantime, the health department will be conducting blood-level tests for all pregnant women and children under six years of age living in the 48060 zip code. Despite the higher than normal levels, health officials say the greatest lead exposure risk continues to be lead-based paint found in older homes.
