Legislative candidates spar during forum

A candidate forum between local candidates running for Michigan House of Representatives and Senate seats was held Wednesday evening at Port Huron’s Municipal Office Center. The event was presented by WPHM and the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce. Among the topics discussed were education, no fault auto insurance and infrastructure. In attendance was 81st district State Representative Republican incumbent Dan Lauwers, who is term limited and making a bid for the State Senate. His Democratic challenger, Debbie Bourgois, who currently serves as a St. Clair County Community College trustee was also in attendance. Democrat Joshua Rivard and Republican Gary Eisen also participated, with each of them hoping to filling Lauwer’s house seat. 83rd district Republican incumbent Shane Hernandez also attended the event, his Democrat opponent, Stefanie Brown, was absent. The event fielded questions from the public and was moderated by WPHM’s Paul Miller.
