Thousands of union workers are on strike outside General Motors plants in Michigan and across the country this morning. United Auto Workers leaders called the strike Sunday saying talks on a new contract had broken down over pay, benefits and other issues. There are about 18,000 UAW workers at 20 GM facilities in Michigan including assembly plants in Lansing and Flint. There are nearly 50-thousand workers across the United States. General Motors issued a statement saying it presented a strong offer that improves wages, benefits and grows U.S. jobs in substantive ways and it is disappointing that the union leadership has chosen to strike. In a statement, GM said it has negotiated in good faith and with a sense of urgency and the goal remains to build a strong future for workers and the business.
