Harsens Island ferry limited to foot traffic only following dock collapse

Those hoping to traverse the North Channel of the St. Clair River between Algonac and Harsens Island won’t be able to bring their car across on the ferry, at least for the time being. Wednesday afternoon the dock at Champion’s Auto Ferry fell in to the river. The ferry owner says they plan to operate on a limited basis today, but only to pedestrian traffic. The first trip was at 8am this morning. Other pedestrian only crossings will occur at noon, 4pm, and 7pm. It is unknown at this time when the dock will be repaired and car ferry operations will resume. Officials say high water levels contributed to the dock collapse.
