The former US Coast Guard Station building located at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse County Park is slated for a makeover. The Friends of the Fort Gratiot Light along with St. Clair County are working to rehab the building to become an exhibition and educational space. David Brooks from the Friends of the Fort Gratiot Light says the building could potentially play host to some of the Port Huron Museum’s maritime artifacts. The cost of the project is expected to be about half a million dollars and Brooks says a fundraising effort has been established. He tells WPHM that crews working on the building have already made an interesting discovery, a hidden mural behind a wall in the station’s radio room. Brooks says the radio room will be restored back to what it would have looked like in the 1930s when the Coast Guard station opened. Those wishing to volunteer their dollars or their time can visit fortgratiotlight.org.
