Plans are moving forward for a new luxury apartment project at the former Smith Family Funeral Home building on 7th Street in Port Huron. Kyle Schieweck says he would like to convert the currently vacant building into nine luxury apartment units. The project, however, has received mixed reactions from the neighborhood. “They don’t want to see another nine units of bad tenants, bad living conditions,” said Schieweick. “I think I’m getting backlash from the way rentals have been run for the past many years.”

This week the Port Huron Planning Commission approved a rezoning request for the property, from the current Central Business District designation to multi-family residential. The architect for the project is Vince Cataldo from Infuz Architects. Schiewick says the units will feature high end finishing, granite counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. The average rent per unit would be between $800 and $1,000 a month once completed.
