The St. Clair County Health Department is issuing a public health alert due to the acceleration of COVID-19 cases. Dr. Annette Mercatante, Medical Health Officer, says the county is seeing a record 9.5%  positivity rate and a nearly 144% increase in new cases per day compared to last month. The St. Clair County Health department says due to the increased number of people infected, local businesses, governments, and healthcare facilities may find it challenging to properly staff their organizations. Asked if her office will issue local restrictions in addition to those already issued by the state health department, Mercatante says the likely answer is no. “We can, the real question is should we?” Mercatante says local orders are not as nearly as effective as those issued regionally or statewide. The public is ordered to wear a mask while in a public space and certain capacity limitations are in place under state health department directives.
