The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for all of Southeast Michigan, including Port Huron, Sandusky, and surrounding areas. The watch begins Tuesday afternoon and remains in effect through Thursday evening.
Forecasters say daytime temperatures in the mid 90s to near 100 degrees, combined with high humidity, could push heat index values above 105 degrees. Overnight lows will only fall into low to mid 70s, offering little relief from the dangerous heat.
Residents are encourage to drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, limit time outdoors especially during the hottest part of the day, and check on the elderly, young children, and others who may be more vulnerable to heat related illness or heat exhaustion. Make sure all pets have access to shade and fresh water, it is important to watch for signs of heat stress.
According to St. Clair County Emergency Manager Justin Westmiller, cooling centers are available at all local library branches throughout St. Clair County, as well as the Mid City Nutrition Soup Kitchen. Local fire departments and municipal offices are also open to residents seeking relief from the daytime heat.
