Local leaders and development partners gathered in Port Huron this week for an official groundbreaking ceremony on the Lincoln Lofts, a new $17.5 million housing development located at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Erie Street.
Directly across from McLaren Port Huron Hospital, the project will bring 40 one and two-bedroom rental apartments to the area for residents earning up to 60 percent of the area median income. Construction begins this week, with completion expected by the end of next year.
Part of a Broader Housing Strategy
Speaking with WPHM at the groundbreaking, Port Huron City Manager James Freed explained that the Lincoln Lofts project represents “Tower 1” of two developments planned for the city. A second, 48-unit building is scheduled to begin construction next April on the old River District site on the city’s southside.
These projects, Freed said, complement ongoing residential construction across Port Huron, including townhomes and row housing in South Park alongside roughly 50 single-family homes currently being built.
Freed also hinted at a third housing project in the works but said he couldn’t share details at this stage of development.
Regional Collaboration Drives Project Forward
The Lincoln Lofts development marks the first major housing initiative in St. Clair County for lead developer Community Housing Network (CHN). CEO Kirsten Elliott emphasized that bringing the project to fruition required a unified effort among regional partners.
The initiative is the result of a multi-year collaboration between CHN, local housing commissions, and the City of Port Huron. Funding for the $17.5 million project is supported through a combination of state tax credit programs, private investments, and local tax incentives.
