A familiar name in St. Clair County politics is headed for the statewide ballot.
Michigan Republican gubernatorial nominee John James announced Thursday morning that he has selected State Representative Jay DeBoyer as his running mate in the November election.
DeBoyer, a Republican from Clay Township, represents Michigan’s 63rd House District, which includes parts of southern St. Clair County and northern Macomb County. He is serving his second term in the Michigan House and currently chairs the House Oversight Committee.
Before being elected to the state House, DeBoyer spent 12 years as St. Clair County Clerk and Register of Deeds. He also previously served as a Clay Township trustee and supervisor.
In announcing his choice, James said DeBoyer’s experience in business, local government and elections made him the right choice. James also pointed to DeBoyer’s ability to work with both Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature.
If James and DeBoyer are elected in November, DeBoyer would serve as lieutenant governor.
James will face Democratic nominee Jocelyn Benson in the November 3 general election. Benson has not yet announced her running mate.
