The post-holiday season can be taxing on families by itself… add to that a government shutdown in which federal workers are going unpaid, and the result could be families struggling to make ends meet. Enter, the United Way of St. Clair County. Campaign director Brent Gillette says those seeking help with utility payments, housing, and food can call 2-1-1, a free service of the United Way. Callers to 2-1-1 will be connected to a live operator here in Michigan 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The United Way has also teamed up with Mid City Nutrition to help provide kitchen essentials to those in need. A list of items can be found online at midcitynutritionsoupkitchen.com . The public is asked to purchase the items, totaling about $40 dollars, and drop them off at the Soup Kitchen. They will then be distributed to military and government employee families throughout the area.
