The Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants Michiganders to get outdoors and get healthy in the New Year and it's offering some ways to do just that. DNR spokeswoman Maia Turek says the New Year is when people tend to make resolutions to get fit, so several state parks are trying to help Michiganders fulfill that resolution by offering Shoe Year’s Hike events. Seven parks across the state will provide free hiking opportunities beginning January 1st through the 9th. And for those who can’t get out to the parks, Turek says the DNR has partnered with Epic Races to offer a virtual 5k event. People can participate by registering on the Epic Races website by December 31st. Then all they have to do is take a photo of themselves being active, and post it to a social media site with the hash-tag Mi ShoeYear.
