Around 5,000 DTE Energy customers were off the grid north and west of Port Huron Sunday afternoon, and for some overnight into Monday. This as temperatures dropped to the teens. Fort Gratiot and Port Huron Townships set up a warming stations at the township halls. DTE Energy says a break in a major power line that fed a sub-station was the cause of the outage. Earlier a downed tree was to blame for a separate outage. Winds brought in by a strong cold front caused much of the problem. The outage also closed up Central Middle School in the Port Huron Area School District.
