SAG Awards 2018 Winners and Memorable Moments

The Screen Actors Guild Awards for 2018 happened Sunday, Jan 21st. Not only is this another honor for these actors to receive for their hard and even often, groundbreaking, work BUT SAG awards are considered to be a good indicator for the Academy Awards. Actors came with excitement and many left feeling empowered. Between Kristen Bell being the first EVER (not just for women) host of the SAG Awards and the inspiring speeches given by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sterling K. Brow, and Morgan Freeman, here is what was noteworthy.

Nicole Kidman brought up something during acceptance speech that Hollywood doesn’t talk about often now that they are pushing the women’s movement forward. Women like Nicole Kidman (40 plus) used to be, essentially, ineligible for awards because they wouldn’t even be hired for a prime roll.

“I want to thank you all for your trailblazing performances and how wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 year’s old. Because 20 years ago we would have been ‘washed up’ at the stage in the game,” said Kidman. “Thank you for proving we are potent and powerful and viable. I just beg the industry stays behind us.”

Not 30 minutes after Sterling K. Brown received his award, the entire cast received an honor. Their reactions (especially the Big Three kids) are priceless. Milo Ventimiglia (Jack Pierce on the show) spoke on behalf of the cast. He was sure to throughly thank the crew. When he realized later that evening that he forgot to thank the art department (which was part of the speech he had written,) he took to instagram to make sure he knew the WHOLE crew was recognized. Here is the cast at the SAG Awards.

Nominated for several awards, Netflix Original Series, “Glow” didn’t take home a title but still had some buzz. Actress and sister-in-law to James Franco, Alison Brie, was stopped on the red carpet to ask about the allegations circling Franco. Recently, multiple women have come forward with allegations against James Franco saying that he was “inappropriate” with their relationship.
What makes his controversy so interesting is that he hasn’t tried to stop them. He says the statements are NOT accurate but,” I have my own side of this story, but I believe in these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that I will hold back things that I could say just because I believe in it that much,” Franco said in an interview. “If I have to take a knock because I am not going to try and actively refute things then I will, because I believe in it that much,” he continued.

When Brie was stopped and asked what she had to say concerning the allegations against her husband’s brother, she said this: “I think that above all, what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone who feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward.” She continued to also say that the statements were not entirely accurate and that they are, “waiting to get all of the information.”
“I obviously support my family,” Brie said to E!News. “But of course, now is the time for listening and that’s what we are all trying to do.” James Franco skipped the red carpet portion of the SAG Awards but did show for the evening’s festivities.

Lifetime Achievement Award:

Morgan Freeman

Rita Moreno yell’s for Morgan Freeman as he get’s ready to start his acceptance speech. Like a true partner, she’s always looking out for him to look his best, even if it’s during his acceptance speech. “Morgan! Morgan, lift up your hat!,” says Moreno trying to make his face more visible to the audience. (We all have a little Rita Moreno in us.)

Here was his speech that may have incited some change for the next SAG awards.

“The award works from the back, but from the front, it’s gender specific… maybe I started something?” If the mic wasn’t on a stand, he would have dropped it.
