Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence took the stage at Dolby Theater to present Best Actress at this year’s Oscar Awards. Foster sported a pair of crutches to aid in getting on and off the stage.
Knowing that people would be curious about her appearance, she addressed the injury with some humor. She joked that The Post actress, Meryl Streep, had been the mastermind behind a well-planned assault and had, “I, Tonya‘d” her. Foster was referring to the award winning drama starring Best Supporting Actress, Allison Janney and Margo Robbie. I, Tonya follows the story of Tonya Harding and her alleged involvement in orchestrating the attack on competitive figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan.
Foster added, “But I’d prefer to not discuss it.” Lawrence nicely transitioned out of further questioning by jokingly saying, “she tripped me once.”
Later, Fosters representative cleared the air and shed a little light on what actually happened to her client. No intentional assaults. The Flightplan actress suffered an injury from a skiing accident according to her rep that spoke to multiple outlets after the evening.
It is true that Foster and Lawrence were replacements for presenting. Traditionally the Best Actress Academy Award is presented by the Best Actor from the previous year. In 2017, Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his role in Manchester By The Sea. Affleck declined presenting due to the sexual misconduct allegations that were made against him last year.
