Childish Gambino Video Features Star-Studded Cartoon Rappers

Childish Gambino has another video this summer that is turning heads.

Childish Gambino “Feels Like Summer” music video

Unlike his video release earlier this year for, “This is America,” this video isn’t politically fueled. While it does tackle some world issues such as climate change, water deprivation and bees dying, it’s not walking the same line as his previous video that garnered over 75 million views. “Feels Like Summer” largely depicts popular rappers participating in summer activities. It also seems that their interactions have an underlying you pop culture references while listen to the laid back track.

Most of the references are easy to make sense of. For instance, Will Smith is washing a “cabbie” which reminds us of “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Or when rappers, Lil Pump and Trippie Red go knock on Kodak’s door, he is show in orange and can’t come outside to play. Kodak was recently arrest for violated house arrest orders. Other activities are not easily connected. Azalia Banks is in a tree? Jaden Smith crashes a BBQ wearing a superhero cape? And the most discussed cameo on Twitter featured Michelle Obama hugging a crying Kanye West while he wears a “Make America Great” cap. There are theories that Michelle is supposed to represent a mother figure to Kanye who lost his mother a couple years back and has seemed lost ever since. Others think it’s supposed to look like a photo of Michelle hugging George Bush, pictured below.

Here is the scene that has the most attention from the video. (2:06) But it’s not the only one people are a little confused about what meaning they are supposed to interpret from it. Take a look at the cameo below.

Gucci Mane is napping on a towel while Dr. Dre, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and JAY – Z do the electric slide behind him?

This next one, people seemed to immediately know what it was representing. We see a sad Chris Brown, who has been shut-out from fans and media ever since the domestic abuse case with Rihanna. This Twitter user shared their take on the scene and most seem to agree on the takeaway.

At (1:29) we see Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott sitting together. Minaj is finishing building her block tower and then Scott pulls a piece out from the bottom and the whole thing collapses. This is in light of the newly ignited feud between the two rappers. Minaj blames Scott for her album not debuting at No. 1 as expected. His album, “Astroworld,” had dropped the week before and kept the No. 1 spot through her release. Scott was able to snag a headliner spot at Lollapalooza in Chicago to help promote his album. Many think he only got that opportunity because of his girlfriend and baby momma, Kylie Jenner.

Beyonce is featured at (2:15) with a nod to Fredo Santana. The rapper from Chicago passed away in January. He was being treated in Los Angeles for kidney failure and was only 27 when he died.

At (3:10) we see Meek Mill holding up a peace sign as he poses with fellow rappers, Lil Wayne and Pusha T while 2 Chainz snaps a photo. The peace sign is likely a reference to #FreeMeekMill. He became a symbol of criminal justice reform when fans and celebrities alike banned together when Meek Mill received  harsh punishment for violating his probation by popping wheelies on his motorbike. He was sentenced to 2-4 years of prison. People demand he be released on the grounds of abuse of power and racially skewed sentencing. He was released in April.

There are an armful of other cameos such as Michael Jackson, Oprah, Jennifer Hudson, and Kid Cudi. Can you name them all? Check out the video below and see how well you do.
