Music producer and social lite, Marshmello, just released a new single featuring vocals from Bastille.
Shortly accompanying that release is a video for the song that will definitely have any person with a heart reaching for the tissue box. This song is special to the producer and he wanted the video to reflect that with a cinematic storyline.
“When Bastille sent me the vocals to Happier for the first time, I was taken back. The amount of emotion that you could feel in the lyrics was crazy,” he wrote in a statement. “As I listened to the song more and more it reminded me of so many things I’ve been through in my life. Toxic relationships, letting go of things I didn’t want to and just situations where happiness came with a price.”
The video starts off with a little girl her birthday party. She is given a yellow bow and then when she looks up, she’s given a puppy to wear the bow named, Mello. An older version of the same little girl is portrayed by Miranda Cosgrove. She goes through daily teenage struggles at school but is always able to feel better when she comes home to Mello. (Relatable, right? We love our furry friends.)
They journey through life’s ups and downs together until Cosgrove is given terrible news and has to say a final goodbye to her best companion. The video flashes forward a couple decades and she’s all grown (portrayed by a different actress.) She’s at her own little girl’s birthday party, gives her a red bow and surprises her daughter with a puppy just like she was all those years ago.
Marshmello explained that the idea for the video was personal for him. He recently went through the tragedy of losing his own dog. “[It] was really hard for me. I wanted the video to embrace the pain that we feel losing someone close to us and the cycle of life. This is what made me happier.”
