Former Michigan Attorney General Frank Kelley died Friday night at age 96. Kelley was affectionately called the “eternal general” for his 37 years as Michigan’s longest-serving attorney general. He was state government’s top lawyer at a time of sweeping change in politics and culture and was credited with creating consumer and environmental protection divisions in the attorney general’s office. Kelley, a Detroit native, was a lawyer in the northern Michigan town of Alpena when Governor John Swainson appointed him attorney general in 1961. Flags in Michigan are to be lowered to half staff in honor of Kelley until Sunday the 21st.
