A local lawmaker paid a visit to the Blue Water Bridge customs plaza Tuesday. Freshmen Republican State Representative Andrew Beeler of Port Huoron received an update on the customs plaza expansion project, which he says could be completed as soon as 2025. This follows a $25 million federal grant last year to help complete the long anticipated project. Beeler tells WPHM so far they are not asking the state for financial assistance but he will be ready to help if they do.

“Just like always there are few logistical pieces that have to get sorted out,” said Beeler. “There are private businesses that are going to be affected by this.”

Asked by WPHM about how the opening of the new Gordie Howe Bridge in Detroit will effect plans for the Blue Water Bridge, Beeler says he’s convinced it shouldn’t make much of a difference in the amount of traffic at the Blue Water Bridge. He also called the continued closure of the US border to non-essential Canadians as “frustrating” saying he feels for local businesses who depend on international travel for their livelihood.
