Officials at the Blue Water Bridge yesterday celebrated the announcement of a new way to pay for border crossings. Under a $9.9 million contract with civil engineering company IBI Group, the toll technology on both sides of not only the Blue Water Bridge but the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge will be updated to a new RFID system.

”We expect to gain a lot from this new, technologically up-to-date system: greater flexibility in toll payment solutions, easier management of devices in the system, and increased accuracy and reliability,” said MDOT Chief Administrative Officer Laura Mester. ”For our customers, we foresee a whole host of benefits.”

The contract costs are being shared equally by Canada’s International Bridge Administration, Federal Bridge Corporation, and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Over time, all three operators plan to discontinue the current card-based systems and transition to windshield tags that are automatically read by the toll system.
