The state Attorney General’s office is suing a former Port Huron papermaker for contamination. Dana Nessel alleges Domtar Industries contaminated groundwater at a Port Huron Township composting facility with paper making sludges that contained high amounts of polyfluoroalkyl substances. Commonly known as PFAS, the chemicals have been used in a wide range of consumer products and can lead to serious health conditions. Nessel’s office says Domtar represented the sludges as inert but test results in groundwater and surface water at Techni-Comp showed levels of PFAS that exceed state standards. The lawsuit seeks a ruling on Domtar’s liability and an order to fully investigate and remediate the chemical contamination.
