Contractors working for the Port Huron Yacht Club have dismantled the remaining portions of the Pere Marquette Railroad Bridge just days ahead of an April 30th deadline. A special condition of a demolition permit issued in 2020 from the US. Army Corps of Engineers stated that the bridge needed to be removed by the end of the month to limit impacts to the navigation of the Black River. The property in which the former railroad bridge lies was purchased by the yacht club in 2012. Since then, the yacht club has faced a nearly decade long fight against preservationists and the Army Corps regarding the bridge’s fate. The Yacht Club cites liability and future growth for the bridge’s removal, while preservationists contend that it was a local landmark and one of few reaming bridges of its kind.
