St. Clair County Community College Trustees – in a reverse decision during a special session meeting Monday – has promoted Chief Operating Officer Kirk Kramer to become president of the college. Trustees denied Kramer that position during their regular session meeting Thursday, opting instead to establish a search committee to fill the position of Dr. Deborah Snyder, who left the college at the start of the fall semester.

Board Chairwoman Karen Niver tells WPHM that Kramer had been acting president since August when then-president Dr. Deborah Snyder took a medical leave of absence and later tendered her resignation. During a special session meeting, Kirk Kramer was appointed College President, and given a 3-year contract by the board following a 5-to-1 vote. Niver gave WPHM some brief comments following Monday’s special meeting, stating she was thrilled with the evening’s outcome.

“It is our… pleasure to be able to say that now he (Kramer) has a contract in place for three year to continue as president while the board of trustees, via a three person subcommittee, decides how to best go about the process. Mr. Kramer’s contract is for three years, not the six years that is typically awarded to a college president.”

Niver says the search committee still plans to begin their process, a process she believes could take several years. The board heard public comments for about an hour leading up to last night’s decision urging trustees to see through the search process they initiated last week. Kramer’s contract was set to expire this coming year, it will now be extended to December of 2026.
