Port Huron residents may be confused when their water bills show up this month asking them to send payments to an address in Detroit. Port Huron Mayor Pauline Repp attempted to clear things up this week saying the city is not getting their water from Detroit. The only thing that’s changed is that mailed utility payments are being processed through a partnership with Huntington Bank called “Lock Box”, whose offices are based in Detroit. She says payments can also still be made in person as before, but with a few new electronic bill-pay options as well.
Port Huron City Manager James Freed says even though the move does serve as a cost-cutting measure, the program offers the ability to set up autopay, paperless billing, payment reminders, and pay by text features. He adds, the service is capable of handling some online transactions that the City Treasure’s Office has previously not been possible to, due to lack of advanced cyber-security.
Port Huron tax or utility payments can now be made electronically using Huntington Bank’s Lock Box, online at PortHuron.org, by mail to the Detroit address listed on new bills, or in person at the Municipal Center, either inside at the Treasurer’s Office or by utilizing the out-door drop box.
