The 100th Port Huron to Mackinac race begins Saturday morning, and the race is already breaking records. With 324 sailing teams registered to start the race, race committee chairman Charlie Trost says that is the highest amount ever, surpassing a previous record of 316 boats that was set in 1985. One of the changes this year is the race course, with all boats taking the same course, retracing the original 1924 course.

“With this new race course that we’re doing, it’s really anyone’s game. No one knows who’s going to take it, there’s really no favorite, because we haven’t taken this race course before.”

In previous years, the larger and faster boats took the longer Cove Island course while the smaller boats took the shorter shore course. With all participates now taking the same route which is similar to the former shore course, it could provide for some pretty quick finishes. Coverage from the starting line of the race begins at 11am tomorrow morning on 1380 WPHM.
