Port Huron’s proposed 144-million dollar budget for the upcoming 2025-2026 fiscal year is now available for public review on the city’s website. City council members were presented with the spending plan during this week’s council meeting. Mayor Anita Ashford spoke with the Blue Water News Network about some of the challenges that come with balancing the city’s financial blueprint.
“You always think about where we’re going to take from in order to make things work,” said Ashford. “Police and fire funding doesn’t move, so adjustments have to come from other areas. I was on red alert thinking about how we were going to manage that.”
Ashford also outlined several key priorities in the proposed budget, including major infrastructure and development efforts.
“We’re looking at projects like the Tainter Gate, the pocket park, downtown improvements, and housing,” she said. “We need to start visualizing what we want our city to look like and how we’re going to pay for it.”
Residents will have a chance to weigh in during a public budget workshop scheduled for Tuesday, May 13th at 6 p.m. in Conference Room 408 of the Municipal Office Center.
