One of Port Huron’s longest-running family-owned businesses is changing hands.
After more than eight decades in operation, Mortimer Lumber has been purchased by EquipmentShare, an equipment rental company that operates nearly 350 rental, retail, and service centers nationwide. The company was founded by former contractors, Jabbok and Willy Schlacks of Columbia, Missouri.
The brothers also run a retail hardware division called Forge & Build, which officially took over Mortimer Lumber’s four locations across the Thumb region on September 1st, including the longtime Port Huron store at 24th and Lapeer Avenue.
Former owner Chip Mortimer says that while the ownership is changing, customers can still expect the same familiar service and products the community has known for more than a generation.
“It’s the same store, but a different name,” Mortimer told WPHM.
All employees have been retained under the new ownership, with the exception of Mortimer’s two sons. The stores will continue to offer lumber, hardware, doors, windows, and other building materials.
Mortimer says he’s looking forward to retirement, including spending more time with his grandchildren, and at his Florida home during the winter months. He also says he will continue to serve on the board at Marwood Nursing and Rehab in Port Huron.
