Pink Responds to Academy’s Call for Women in Music to “Step Up.”

Along with thousands of fans, Pink is also voicing her opinion on the male DOMINATED 2018 Grammys. The #GrammysSoMale hashtag was trending in no time. To add fuel to the raging fire Academy President, Neil Portnow, added his own two cents on the hashtag.

“It has to begin with…women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level…[They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome,” Portnow told Variety.

While Pink did not directly respond to Neil’s message, she did speak out on her own social media. “Women owned music this year. They’ve been killing it. And every year before this.”

Pink herself has had an amazing year. She’s getting ready to hit the road this summer for her newest album, Beautiful Trauma. She was nominated for the Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy, along with Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Kesha and the only male nominee for that category, Ed Sheeran. The songs nominated in this category included stunning performances by Pink where she *literally* FLEW across the venue at the iHeart Radio Music Festival and scaled a building for another show. You also have songs like “Praying” and “A Million Reasons” that were up for Best Pop Solo Performance that bring tears to the audience at every performance. “Shape of the You” ended up taking the cake and the artists had a hard time hiding their disdain at that point in the show.

In fact, Ed Sheeran beat out Kesha’s “Praying” in TWO categories. Needless to say, those who have followed Kesha’s struggles with the music industry and watched her comeback with an extremely personal album had some less-than pleasant things to say.

SZA was the most nominated female artist of the night, receiving FIVE nominations and lost all of them. The only female soloist to snag an award that evening was Alessia Cara, who unfortunately is receiving backlash for her win. (WHAT??????) Alessia Cara whom received the Grammy for Best New Artist is under scrutiny for receiving that award due to the date her album was released (back in 2015.) To clear the air on this one, she was nominated and not her album. The 21 year-old singer is also an accomplished writer with socially important songs like, “1-800-273-8255” released in time to receive nominations, it got her on the ballot this year.

Portnow continued to shoot himself in the foot when he went on to say, “I don’t have personal experience of those kinds of brick walls that you face but I think it’s upon us—us as an industry—to make the welcome mat very obvious, breeding opportunities for all people who want to be creative and paying it forward and creating that next generation of artists.”

It seems as if Portnow is completely unaware of what the Rainbow album is about or how long Kesha fought in court to be able to produce the album free of Dr. Luke.  “Women in music don’t need to ‘step up’—women have been stepping since the beginning of time. Stepping up, and also stepping aside,” Pink tweeted.

Pink finished with, “When we celebrate and honor the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women step up every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal and what it looks like to be fair.”
