Spring break was probably a lot of fun for the kids here in the Blue Water Area (heck, I’d be happy to have a week off!), but school is back in session. Not only that, but SAT, ACT, and M-STEP exams which seemed so far away are kicking off now. A lot of kids are probably doing marathon studying sessions, putting their nose to the grindstone trying to cram as much knowledge as they can in their brains like we did back in out school days. But that could do more harm than good!
Luckily, you can help your child with these techniques from Goconqr.com. And the best thing is you don’t even need to know about the subjects they’re studying, which is a good thing because I’m 34 and I have no clue how common core math is suppose to work. While some of these tips are tried and true tradition, others might surprise you! The following are a few of the “20 Study Hacks to Improve Your Memory”:
Walk Before an Exam

Tell your child to consider some light exercise before going into a big test. A study shows that getting in 20 minute exercise charges up your brain and improves your memory!
Treat Yo’ Self!
Studying is a pain no matter the age. But using a small rewards system can make the learn more worthwhile. There’s all sort of different and creative ways to motivate your kid to hit the books! Goconqr.com shows an example of placing a gummy bear in between the paragraphs of study material.
Taking Breaks

Stopping the studying may seem counterproductive, but it can be a good thing! This is what I meant when I said marathon studying sessions do more harm than good. Tell your kids to take a quick break around the 45-minute mark. It’ll help keep motivation high and give their brains a chance to absorb the information they just looked at. Any longer and concentration takes a hit, with material not being retained after about an hour and a half.
Sense of Smell and Taste

This one was one of the cooler tips I came across. While studying for a certain topic, suggest your kid chew on a specific type of gum or wear a particular scent. Then during the test, they can use that taste or scent to jump-start their memory!
These are only a few of the examples given to allow your kids to tackle their studies in interesting and effective ways. Check out the rest of GoConqr.com’s study hacks here!
