The Sweet Home Alabama actress has been busy lately.

Not only has Reese Witherspoon been starring in and producing the HBO mega-hit’s second season, but she has also been in the final stages of negotiations for a third Legally Blonde movie! Deadline broke the news that the original producers, Marc Platt and Adam Seigel are producing along with a new addition to the production crew, Witherspoon herself. After her success with Big Little Lies, they would be crazy not to include her in the creative process.
The original writers who adapted the first film from the Amanda Brown novel, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah are in the final stages of being contracted as well. They intend to start writing immediately, according to Deadline, once they have the green light. No director has been named yet. Robert Luketic directed the 2001 film.
Witherspoon has teased the idea of reprising her role as Elle Woods for years now. She thought a couple year’s ago it wasn’t the right time. But as the legal atmosphere began to change, so did her opinion! In 2015, she did an interview with E!News and said, “A lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas for it. I actually think it’s kind of great right now, because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women.”
Where will Elle Woods be 16 years after the first film? “I think it’d be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office—like president,” said Witherspoon in the same interview. No word on if this is the path Legally Blonde 3 will take. “I need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea and we’ll do it. I do think it’s a good time to do it—I think women need that kind of positivity right now,” she told E!News shortly after the election.
The film is iconic. The pink-wearing, feminine lawyer spoke to women across the nation and in it’s time, it was one fo the first films to break this barrier to that audience. The first picture had an $18 million dollar budget and grossed $140 million. The follow-up film that was released in 2003, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde grossed $124 million.
It’s no surprise Witherspoon is up to return as Elle Woods. She always loved that role. “I loved making Legally Blonde because I love pink! It was really fun! I got to wear all of the amazing costumes,” Witherspoon said during a Facebook Live Q&A session.

“I also got to work with a dog every day. I’m obsessed with dogs. I love dogs,” she said. Unfortunately, her dog co-star passed away about two years ago. Witherspoon enjoyed working with Bruiser. “He was just really sweet! I miss him, I really do.”
In that same Facebook Q&A session she also mentioned she’d do a Sweet Home Alabama sequel. “We are not making a [Sweet Home Alabama] sequel that I know of… But if Disney wants to make a sequel, they can just call me: I would happily make Sweet Home Alabama 2.”
Can we just have both, please?
Witherspoon is currently filming Big Little Lies season 2 which isn’t set to have a premier until 2019. Which just leaves us to say… ELLE WOODS 2020?!
